According to the Department of Water and Sanitation, there are still 2.2 million households across South Africa that are using pit latrines and septic tanks or have no sanitation facilities at all. This is especially prevalent in rural or informal settlements. Although, the use of the bucket toilet system is still widespread, provinces are making slow progress eradicating this system despite utilising a portion of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant for sanitation provision.
