Campaign against Social Media Censorship

Amandla SOS

The SOS Coalition and amandla.mobi are currently running a campaign calling to the Film and Publication Board (FPB) to scrap its draft regulations which has been called 'the worst internet law Africa has ever seen' and could severely impact civil society organisations publishing content online along with social media users - including bloggers.

The FPB is supposed to classify movies and TV shows to protect children and stop the distribution of child pornography. But there is no evidence that the Board’s proposed regulations, which would amount to internet censorship, will stop child pornography online. This is because, according to experts, child pornography is shared using special software and websites in the ‘deep web’, not the regular internet.

The new regulations would stop the public from posting updates, tweets, images, videos and blogs without first getting approval from the Film and Publication Board. If we don’t mobilise our communities before the 15th of July, this regulation could clamp down on activists using blogs, websites and social media to speak truth to power.

Additionally, the Film and Publication Board is doing an 'Education Road Show' across South Africa. You can join other amandla.mobi members at a Road Show near you by telling them where you live. They will let you know the details of when the Road Show is near you.
