Infographic: The energy crisis and government’s Five-Point Plan

The country is facing a real risk of daily load shedding, according to the Department of Energy. The Department briefed the Portfolio Committee on Energy yesterday about the progress of the Five-Point Plan in addressing South Africa’s current energy crisis. The Five-Point Plan, commissioned in December 2014, is a strategy of immediate and short term interventions over the next three years that aims to limit the risk of load shedding. However, after months of load shedding, the Department told the Committee that there continued to be a shortage of energy supply despite stagnant/suppressed demand and adequate installed capacity.

A “War Room” has been set up to facilitate and effect the maintenance plans to improve plant performance. The objective is to improve plant performance while limiting load shedding. The War Room comprises of representatives from the Departments of Energy, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Public Enterprises, Trade and Industry, Economic Development, and Water and Sanitation, as well as the National Treasury and Eskom.
